Chelsea are keen to permanently sign Mateo Kovacic

Kovacic has been a feature in Maurizio Sarri’s starting XI, making 17 appearances and has played alongside Jorginho and N’Golo Kante in a three-man midfield, keeping Ross Barkley on the sidelines.

After two seasons with Inter Milan, Kovacic moved to Real Madrid for £26.7million and they will not allow him to leave unless it is for a significant fee, one Chelsea are willing to discuss, but now Spurs have entered the fray for his signature, according to Spanish site AS.

The Croatia international watched on as fellow countryman Luka Modric won the Ballon d’Or in Paris on Monday and he has been touted as his long-term successor.

However, the 24-year-old indicated in September he was more than content being at Chelsea.

“I’m really happy at Chelsea,” he said. “The city is amazing, the fans are great, the stadium, everything is nice, so I could imagine myself here.

“After two years of struggling in Madrid, playing and then not playing, it was difficult. “You don’t have the confidence, you don’t try the things you know.

“This was my decision to go. Chelsea came, I spoke with the coach and the club. “It was definitely just Chelsea for me.

“I wanted to come here and I am happy that it happened.”
